Rubrics are more than just grading tools. They are foundational to transparent and effective assessment. In essence, a rubric is a matrix that articulates evaluation criteria, a scoring scale, and descriptive performance levels for each criterion.1
Well-designed rubrics can benefit both instructors and students. For educators, rubrics can support more consistent grading and more targeted feedback.1 For students, rubrics can clarify expectations and support self-regulated learning by making success criteria explicit.2 3
One barrier is that designing a high-quality rubric takes time and careful thought.1 Criteria must align with the learning outcomes of the course, and descriptors need to be specific enough that performance levels are meaningfully distinguishable.
Why Use Generative AI for Rubric Creation?
LLMs can help with the front-end workload of rubric drafting by generating a structured first draft you can then review and refine. Instead of starting from a blank page, you can input the details of an assignment and ask the model to propose criteria and performance descriptors. This can save time and spark ideas for wording and structure.
Importantly, using AI in this manner keeps the educator in control. Treat the model as a drafting partner that generates suggestions, while you remain the expert who curates and edits the final rubric. After generating a draft, you can iterate by asking for changes in tone (e.g. simpler language) or format (e.g. table form).
What LLMs Can and Canât Do in Rubric Design
LLMs are good at generating structured text and imitating rubric formats. Given a well-crafted prompt, an AI can produce a rubric draft with criteria and performance level descriptions that looks polished and complete.
However, LLMs do not know your course goals unless you tell them, and they cannot judge whether a proposed criterion is valid, fair, or assessable in your specific context. In practice, this means an AI-generated rubric can look professional while still being misaligned, overly generic, or missing what you care about most.
A practical workflow
- Prepare key information: Clarify the purpose of the assignment, the learning outcomes it targets, and what excellent performance looks like.
- Prompt for a first draft: Ask for criteria and level descriptors, and specify the number of levels and any required dimensions (e.g. evidence, reasoning, methodology, reflection).
- Review and revise: Remove irrelevant criteria, tighten vague descriptors, and ensure the rubric matches your course language and standards.
- Sanity-check: Ask a colleague to read the rubric, or test it on 1â2 sample submissions to see if the levels are distinguishable and the criteria are assessable.
Best Practices for AI-Assisted Rubric Development
- Always align with learning outcomes: The rubric should reflect what you want students to learn and demonstrate. If the AI suggests a criterion that isnât relevant, replace or remove it. Conversely, add any criterion the AI missed but is crucial for your context.
- Emphasize higher-order thinking when appropriate: Include criteria that target analysis, evaluation, creation, and other higher-order cognitive skills, if those align with the assignmentâs purpose.
- Be specific and clear: Use concrete, observable terms rather than vague descriptors that are hard for students to act on and hard for instructors to apply consistently.
- Check for bias and inclusivity: AI models may inadvertently carry biases present in their training data.4 Examine rubric language to ensure itâs free of culturally specific assumptions that disadvantage some students.
- Review for accuracy and feasibility: Ensure you (and students) can realistically observe the differences between levels, and that any referenced standards (e.g. APA format) are correct.
- Maintain your role as educator: Use AI as a support tool, but you decide the final wording and standards.
